Characteristics of Study Program

Cognitive Informatics (CI) is a master’s degree program at Prague University of Economics and Business at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics. This multidisciplinary field deals with fundamental issues within computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, cybernetics, cognitive sciences, neuropsychology, philosophy, linguistics and life sciences included neuroscience.

Main goal is to prepare interdisciplinarily educated experts, who can succeed in both administrative and economic management in a current rapidly globalizing information society.

The field leads students to develop their ability to work with all kind of information. Unlike an often used term ‘computer literacy’ there is an ability to use a computer a means, not an objective. Study program aims to gain skills to search for information, orientate in them, classify them and process in a whole context.

Apart from the ability of active searching, classifying and processing information, a graduate of the program knows, how processes are created, used and what their role is within self-organization of complex systems. The development of information society leads to rapidly increasing demand for such interdisciplinary educated experts.

The program is designed as a small one with a family atmosphere, where all of the students know each other, and spend their time together at formal or informal events. Every year teachers and students organize events such as Symposion of Cognitive Informatics (reunion of all students, teachers and graduates of the CI program), meetups, conferences and informal meetings. This kind of attitude enables much more individual and closer relationship between lecturers and students than usual.

What students say about Cognitive Informatics program?

It’s a combination of studies about people and IT. These two worlds intermingle and they cannot be separated, and it’s necessary to understand their connection and cooperation. The field is a great choice for people whose interests intersect computer sciences and humanities. Its aim is to prepare specialists who understand information systems, artificial intelligence or data processing as well as cognitive science, philosophy or neuroscience.”

Cognitive Informatics is a bridge between cognitive science and informatics. Courses bring together disciplines like psychology, philosophy, neurosciences, linguistics, artificial intelligence and intelligent systems. A graduate has knowledge that helps him to build a carrier both in a business (Business Processing, UX Design etc.) and research.”

The program connects computer science with psychology and philosophy. It is focused on artificial intelligence, cognitive science and philosophy, and the main goal is to create a group of polyhistors who understand even other fields than informatics.”

This multidisciplinary field combines studies about IT and its user. It examines a human’s brain and behavior from many perspectives: cognitive, neurological, psychological and philosophical. Gained knowledge can be applied when designing business processes, software processes and theoretically even in a theory of artificial intelligence.”

Establishment of the study program was supported by European social fund (ESF).
